Bioprocess & Bioproducts Programme E-mail

India possesses abundant and diverse bio-resources as agricultural residues and forest products, potential of which has not been exploited so far in terms of deriving value-added bio-products. Bioproducts extracted from sustainable bio-resources by various bioprocesses are emerging areas, which have received much attention worldwide. This is due to the primary attributes of biotransformation technologies such as environment friendliness, optimum utilization of bio-resources and enhancement of rural economy coupled with employment generation etc. There exists tremendous opportunity to derive not only energy & fuel but also a wide range of chemicals through bio-chemical conversions of the biomass resources.

Bioprocess & Bioproducts Programme of TIFAC was launched in January 2007 with the aim to address critical technology needs for biotransformation & enzymatic processes towards development of active pharmaceutical ingredients, neutra-ceuticals, phyto-chemicals, value-added bio-products, bio-energy & bio-fuels. While catalyzing technology development activities in the field of bio-products and bio-processes, the TIFAC programme aims to focus on the following:

  • Identification of technologies with far reaching social, economic & commercial consequences
  • Development & demonstration of select technologies in pre-treatment, processing and conversion of biomass to produce fuels, chemicals and other value-added products
  • Promotion of technology capabilities in the sector with a view to reaching out to the wider cross-section of stake holders in the national & international arena

Under the program, TIFAC extends Technology Development Assistance (TDA) for technology development/demonstration projects in partnership with industries (SMEs) with technology support from in-house R&D / national labs / academic institutions.

To start with, six projects have been launched so far under the programme in the aforesaid sectors – one having been completed, five projects are ongoing.
